Condemnation of the Soviet Union’s action last fall in resuming nuclear weapons tests in the atmosphere and sharp concern over “the prospect” that the United States may shortly engage in similar tests was expressed here today by leaders of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, representative body of the Reform rabbinate.

“We are convinced,” the rabbis declared, “that whatever scientific or military gains might be forthcoming from such tests are more than offset by the further radioactive pollution of the atmosphere, and by the heightening of international tensions.”

These views coupled with a call to the 17 nation disarmament conference in Geneva “to end nuclear testing and the stockpiling of nuclear weapons” were expressed in a statement by the CHARS officers and executive board at the conclusion of a two-way meeting at the organization’s national headquarters here. The Central Conference of American Rabbis has more than 800 members.
