The American Jewish Committee honored today Father John LaFarge, chaplain of the Catholic Interracial Council, and George K. Hunton, executive secretary of the council, on their retirement from that agency. Dr. John Slaw-son, AJCommittee executive vice-president, presented a Menorah to Father LaFarge, and Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum, AJCommittee director of interreligious affairs presented a Passover Seder plate to Dr. Hunton.
The two Catholic officials were among the founders of the first Catholic Interracial Council in this country in 1934. There are now almost 40 councils joined in the National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice. The AJCommittee has worked closely with the council for more than 25 years for improvement of intergroup and interfaith relations.
