Rabbi Binyamin Nissim Ohanna, spiritual head of the Sephardic community here, died this weekend at the age of 81. A known Talmudic scholar, Rabbi Ohanna had earlier served in major rabbinical posts in Cairo, Egypt; Gaza, Palestine; and Melta. Born in Medea, Algeria, Rabbi Ohanna was brought to Palestine at the age of six and was ordained in Jerusalem. He was also a graduate of the Rabbinical Seminary in Prague.
