Ground-breaking ceremonies were held here today for the construction of a new building for the Floral Park Jewish Center, which was completely destroyed in a fire last year. Mayor Leslie W. Carpenter of Floral Park was among the guests at the ceremonies which also included the interment of the charred remains of the Torah scrolls, Bibles and prayer books damaged in the blaze. Rabbi Maurice Lamm, spiritual leader of the synagogue, conducted the ceremonies.
The local fire, police and public works departments were awarded honorary plaques by the congregation for “bravery, heroism and selfless assistance” in connection with the fire. During the past year, the synagogue has been holding services and conducting religious school classes in an unused vault of the Inter-County Title Guaranty and Mortgage Company, which offered the bank premises to the congregation. The new structure is scheduled for completion next September.
