The President of Israel appeared today to be fighting a losing battle against plans of the Parliamentary Finance Committee to triple his salary from its present 4,500 pounds ($1,500). His official chauffeur gets the same salary.

Members of the Finance Committee agreed that the basic salary of President Ben-Zvi must be raised to a level commensurate with the status of his office, despite the President’s strong objections. They noted that the President’s allowances of 15,000 pounds ($5,000) are turned over by him entirely to charities. The salary increase is scheduled to be presented to the Knesset for approval next week.
