Israel withdrew today from the Asian Olympic Games which will open in Jakarta, Indonesia Friday because Indonesia failed to send identity cards to the 37 Israeli athletes named for the games. The identity cards are required for entry into Indonesia.
Moslem Indonesia was known to have been under considerable Arab pressure to prevent Israel’s participation in the games. However, the Indonesian Government was obligated under regulations of the Asian Games Federation to facilitate participation by Israel which had been formally invited to send a contingent.
The Israel Olympics Committee called the Indonesian action a violation of federation regulations and said it would take steps to have the Jakarta contests disqualified.
