The Israel Government is gratified that many friendly states will take the initiative at the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly to propose direct talks between Israel and the Arab states, Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, said today. She was reporting to the Security and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Israel Parliament on the major issues slated for discussion at the UN Assembly which opens next month.

It was disclosed today that Israel’s delegation to the UN Assembly would back the reelection of U Thant in the post of Secretary General whose term as Acting Secretary General expires next April. Israel will also support the admission of Algeria to United Nations membership.
