The Alliance Israelite Universelle has negotiated a new agreement with the Moroccan Government to continue to provide secular and religious education for thousands of Jewish children in the 74 Alliance schools in Morocco, an Alliance leader announced today on his return from Rabat.
Marcel France, Alliance vice-president and president of the American Friends of the Alliance, also reported that, in his negotiations, the Government officials had promised to take measures to insure to the teachers in the Alliance schools the same security on seniority and pension rights which civil service employes in the Moroccan Administration have. He called the attitude of the Moroccan Government toward the school network founded by the Alliance in Morocco nearly 100 years ago “a shining example of fairness and statesmanship.”
He also reported that the Alliance had purchased a building in Paris which will be the first of a group of Alliance secondary schools in France for Algerian Jewish refugees. The curriculum will be similar to that of French secondary schools but will also include courses in Bible, Hebrew and post-biblical literature. The Paris school is expected to be in operation during the current school year.
