King Hassan II of Morocco launched a campaign for the “Arabization” and “Islamization” of all schools in the kingdom in the course of a speech today before the country’s Superior Educational Council in Rabat.
The monarch declared that “our goal is to teach in all Moroccan schools a standard program, taught in Arabic. ” Following the King’s speech, the council adopted a resolution to make Arabic “the universal teaching language for all subjects, ” and called for preparation of an “Arabization” program.
The Alliance Israelite Universelle maintains 74 schools in Morocco for several thousand Jewish school children who receive secular and religious education. Both the French and Arabic languages are used in instruction. Agreement with the Moroccan Government governing the schools and the status of their staffs was announced by the Alliance last week.
