Dr. Zorach Warhaftig, Minister for Religious Affairs, assured Israel Arab leaders today that the Government would grant permission to Israel’s Moslems to undertake pilgrimages to Mecca, Islam’s holiest shrine in Saudi Arabia. Moslems are required to make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca during their lifetime, as one of the four tenets of the Islamic faith. He expressed concern, however, that the Arab States might refuse to permit the transit of Israeli Arabs.
