Lord Privy Seal Edward Heath told the House of Commons yesterday that the British Government was informed in advance of the plan of the United States to sell Hawk defense missiles to Israel. He made the disclosure in a written reply to a question from Labor MP Roy Mason in which he also said that the United States had stressed to Britain that the decision did not imply any change in its general policy about avoiding an arms race in the Middle East.
The Government leader added that the British Government’s policy on the supply of arms to the Middle East “has been directed for many years to the maintenance of stability and peace in the area. While we are always ready to consider the legitimate defensive needs of the countries concerned, we have no intention of stimulating an arms race, ” he added. “This policy remains unchanged. “
