A bill to provide textbook aid to parochial and other non-public school pupils was signed into law yesterday by Gov. John H. Chafee, with prospects of an early court test of the new law’s constitutionality. The Governor said he believed the measure “meets the constitutional requirements set forth by the Supreme Court.”

Mrs. John W. Lenz, chairman of the Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, announced that the local board had voted unanimously to support a test case in the courts if the Governor signed the bill. In Washington, Protestants and Other Americans for Separation of Church and State indicated it also would test the constitutionality of the law.
