Three Jewish youths have been named winners in nationwide scholastic contests in various fields, it was announced today, Carla Lipsig, a 17-year-old student at Brandeis University, was chosen the co-winner in a national essay contest on the topic, “Youth’s Challenge in the Labor Market of the 60’s.” Sylvan Cappell, 16, a student at the Bronx High School of Science in New York, and Arthur Shapiro, 17, who attends Central High School in Philadelphia, won first and second prizes respectively in the Westinghouse National Science Talent Search.
As a winner of the essay contest held in connection with the 50th anniversary of the United States Department of Labor, Miss Lipsig was personally introduced to President Kennedy by George Meany, president of the AFL-CIO.
Cappell, who is a former student at New York yeshivas and a great-grandson of the Mozhitzer Rebbe, was awarded the top prize in the Westinghouse competition a $7,500 scholarship to the college of his choice. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cappell of the Bronx. Shapiro, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Shapiro of Philadelphia, was awarded a $6,000 scholarship as second prize.
