Senator Jacob K. Javits announced today that he will introduce into the Senate a resolution calling on the United States Government to initiate negotiations for a mutual defense treaty in the Middle East with the United Kingdom, France, Israel “and any Middle East state including the Arab states which would be willing to hold the borders of its neighbors inviolate.”
In an address at the annual national dinner of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America here, the New York Senator warned of “a mounting war threat in the Middle East” arising from the “declared intentions” of the United Arab Republic “to liquidate Israel and to push the Israelis into the sea.”
The resolution, Sen. Javits said, would also express the sense of Congress that the United States.”re-state at the very least, the declaration about the inviolability of borders in the Middle East made in 1950 between the United Kingdom, France and the United States. ” He said the resolution, which will be introduced next week, will consolidate the ideas expressed during the past week in the Senate in the debate on the Middle East situation.
Noting that Egypt’s President Nasser received U.S. aid last year totaling an estimated $250, 000, 000, Sen. Javits stated: “We must determine whether we want to let Nasser continue his state of war with Israel, He is interfering in every state in the Middle East; in Saudi Arabia and Jordan where the government is under attack through riots said to be fomented on a pro-Nasser basis and in Yemen where he has just had his troops. In addition, he is acquiring large amounts of arms from the Soviet Union and other Communist sources, creating a very dangerous arms race in that area of the world.”
