Britain and the United States have asked U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations, to strengthen the United Nations diplomatic “presence” in Jordan to deal with “the threatening Middle East crisis, ” the Sunday Observer here reported today. According to the newspaper, John Spinelli, head of the European office of the UN, will fly Wednesday from his headquarters in Geneva to Amman, to deal with the situation. Officially, Mr. Spinelli is the UN official who embodies the United Nations “presence” in Jordan.
(In Washington, officials denied that Egypt had been “warned” against intervening in Jordan. They said the State Department sought the assessment and views of both Israel and Egypt on intentions in connection with Jordan. The U.S. Sixth Fleet alert and the ready status of some British forces in the Eastern Mediterranean was not necessarily directed against Egypt but pertained to the defense of Jordan against outside aggression from any quarter, the officials indicated.)
