Every leading Zionist and Jewish overseas relief organization in the United States, and many individual leaders, issued messages of condolence today, all expressing deep grief over the passing of Louis Lipsky and lauding his career, devoted to Zionism.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, said that the WZO “records with profound grief the passing of its beloved colleague, an outstanding son of the Jewish people, Louis Lipsky. ” The message said the late Zionist leader had been “uniquely qualified to give outstanding and dedicated leadership to the American Zionist movement of which he was a preeminent founder. “
Dr. Dewey D. Stone, chairman of the United Israel Appeal, described Mr. Lipsky as “a keen theoretician, prolific author and magnificent orator, ” whose “fighting spirit was admired by friend and movement alike. “
The World Confederation of General Zionists, under the co-chairmanship of Dr. Israel Goldstein and Mrs. Rose L. Halpern, issued a statement declaring: “Together with the entire Jewish world we mourn the death of Louis Lipsky, the acknowledged dean of American Zionism. His entire life was devoted to the threefold credo of love for Zion, reverence for his people’s traditions and profound devotion to his native America, For over 60 years he was an integral part of the Zionist movement in the United States. His deep convictions, personal integrity and dynamic leadership made his name synonymous with Zionism in this country. His loss will long be felt, “
Abraham A. Feinberg, president of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute, said that, as a member of the board of directors since the Institute’s inception, Mr. Lipsky had been “anountiring supporter, “whose” whole life had been dedicated to the creation and preservation of a Jewish homeland. ” Samuel Daroff, president of the American Jewish League for Israel, expressed sorrow at the passing of “its founder and honorary president, the dean of American Zionism and lifelong dedicated warrior for Jewish causes. “
Albert Schiff, president of the Jewish National Fund, called Mr. Lipsky “the ideal leader of the American Zionist movement, which he saw progress from a small insignificant group to one of the most powerful forces within American Jewry.”
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-president of the Israel Bond Organization, lauded Mr. Lipsky’s “lifetime of dedication to his people and to the Zionist ideal” describing his career as “a historic chapter in the establishment of Israel. “
