U. J. A. Enters into Consultation with Council of Jewish Federations

The National United Jewish Appeal has entered into a cooperative budget information and consultation process with the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, it was announced jointly today by Joseph Meyerhoff, general chairman of the national UJA, and Louis Stern, president of the CJFWF. The agencies came together earlier this month for their first meeting to initiate the process, the announcement said.

Representatives of the overseas agency will continue to meet periodically with the CJFWF’s Committee on Overseas Services to present detailed budget information and to discuss UJA’s underlying needs, services, and major operations. This newly concluded arrangement parallels that which the two parent organizations of the UJA–the Jewish Agency for Israel, Inc. and the American Joint Distribution Committee–entered into with the CJFWF earlier this year.

The national UJA receives the largest share of all funds raised by federated welfare campaigns in this country. The budget information and consultation process with UJA deals with the costs of its fund-raising operations. The process with JAFI, Inc. and JDC deals with their overseas immigration, welfare, and related services.

Both Mr. Meyerhoff and Mr. Stern declared that these opportunities for discussion, questions, and reactions are making possible greater mutual understanding and closer cooperation for the benefit of Jewish needs in Israel and other countries. They both welcomed the process of closer cooperation between UJA and the community welfare funds. Reports of the pertinent substance and developments at these sessions will be made available to member welfare funds of the CJFWF.

The UJA was represented by Mr. Meyerhoff, and Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the agency. Chairman of the CJFWF Overseas Services Committee is Irving Kane of Cleveland. His committee membership includes a national cross-section of community leaders–presidents, budget chairman, executive directors, and other officials of local federations.
