Two Jewish painters were today awarded major prizes at the seventh biennial Festival of Modern Art held here. They are Adolph Gottlieb. of New York, the sole entry from the United States, who was awarded a first prize of 2, 000, 000 cruzeiros ($2, 000), and Yaacov Agam of Israel, who was given the Artistic Research Prize. Haim Gamzu, director of the Israel pavilion at the festival, was complimented on the exhibit by the head of the international panel of judges.
Among the Brazilian entries which were given awards was a work by the Jewish sculptress, Felicia Leirner, widow of the prominent art patron, Isai Leirner, who sponsored the Israeli pavilion during the past six biennial art festivals here.
