A resolution urging the European Common Market to resume negotiations with Israel “at an early date, with a view toward concluding a satisfactory agreement with Israel” was adopted here today by the representatives of 17 European countries attending the European Parliament here.
The resolution, introduced by Senator Vos, of The Netherlands, deplored the fact that, thus far, the negotiations for an Israeli link with the European Economic Community has not resulted in an agreement. The resolution urged resumption of EEC-Israeli negotiations.
Two members of the Israel Farliament, Haim Zadok, of the Mapai Party, and Zalman S.Abramov, of the Liberal Party, attended the session as observers. Mr. Zadok, addressing the parley, told the 17 members of the organization;
“The only logical solution, and the most effective solution of Israel’s case before the EEC, would be an agreement on Israel’s association with the EEC. By failing to provide a satisfactory solution for Israel’s problems, the EEC countries, all of them nations friendly to Israel, may be, however, unwittingly, helping the objectives of the Arab boycott and may be giving aid and comfort to those who seek to undermine Israel’s economy.”
It was generally expected here that the EEC’s Council of Ministers, which is to meet next month at Brussels, will re-examine Israel’s aim for a link, which has beens stalemated until now. It was expected that the Council of Ministers may give new directives to the Euromart’s representatives to resume negotiations with Israel before the end of 1963.
