Mayor Robert F. Wagner today signed the “Fair Sabbath” law which permits so-called “family stores” that are closed Saturdays to be open on Sundays. New York City was authorized by the State Legislature last spring to adopt such legislation.

The Mayor was congratulated, for signing the bill, by several groups representing the Jewish community, including the American Jewish Congress and the New York Board of Rabbis. The ordinance was passed by the City Council two weeks ago and entered into power today following the Mayor’s signature.
