The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of Latin America decided to establish a rabbinical seminary in Buenos Aires to train Orthodox rabbis and teachers for all Latin American countries. The decision was one of the resolutions adopted at the closing session of a six-day conference attended by 18 rabbis representing 10 countries. Rabbi Abraham Hershberg of Mexico City, who was elected president of the organization, will shortly fly to Buenos Aires to implement the resolution.
The rabbis also acted to strengthen religious education in all Latin American countries to help build religious schools. The goal of seeking to unite all Orthodox Jewish communities in the countries was approved.
The rabbis voted also to accept an offer of the Israeli Ministry for Religious Affairs to send students to Israel to be trained as rabbis and educators for their native countries. A plan was approved to prepare religious literature in Spanish and to open special headquarters for traveling rabbis visiting the Jewish communities in those countries.
A proposal to organize semi-annual rabbinical conference was approved. The next conference will be held in Argentina. Countries represented were Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua and Peru.
