Final approval for creation of a Chair of Hebrew at the Sorbonne University, the third in French universities, was reported here today.

The decision was made known to the Israeli cultural counsellor by Prof. M. Ayman, Dean of the university’s Faculty of Arts. The final step is ratification by the French Chief of State, a formality. Hebrew chairs exist at two other universities–Lille and Toulouse.

The Hebrew courses, leading to the highest academic qualifications, will open next April when the summer semester is started. The first lecturer was expected to be Prof. Haim Rabin of the Hebrew University who will come to the University as a visiting associate professor. He will be followed in the winter of 1964-65 by Prof. Lea Goldberg.
