A Jew named Gelb was sentenced to death during a mass trial for alleged “economic crimes” in the Carpatho-Ukrainian region of the Soviet Union, information reaching here today from the USSR revealed. Mr. Gelb, whose first name was not given, was identified in the report as a resident of Munkachevo, in the Western Ukraine.
Mr. Gelb, today’s report indicated, had been one of 13 Jews in the mass trial held last December at Uzgorod. Twelve of the Jews convicted in that proceeding had previously been named by the organ of the local Communist Party, Zakarpatskaya Pravda. The 12 had been given sentences ranging from 10 years’ imprisonment to 15 years. Mr. Gelb’s name, however, had been omitted by the Communist newspaper. It was not known here today whether the death sentence against him has as yet been carried out.
