The commercial agreement between the European Economic Community and Israel, under which Israel will receive substantial tariff reductions on many of its exports to the six nations of the European Common Market, was signed here today before television cameras and popping flash-bulbs.
Ambassador Amiel Najar of Israel and Alex Herbst, director-general for external relations of the EEC Commission, signed the agreement in the Grande Salon of the EEC. The agreement was reached on April 27. All member delegations to the EEC attended the ceremony
Ambassador Najar told the audience that Israel was pleased with the agreement. He emphasized the fact that the Israel pact was only the second commercial agreement with a country not in the EEC framework.
The EEC official asked indulgence for the difficulties in dealing with the EEC which he said was a new organization still in process of creation whose administrative framework was only now slowly taking shape. Subsequently, all participants met later at the Ambassador’s residences to continue the celebration of the pact signing.
