German Court Considers Proposal to Inspect Auschwitz Death Camp

Download PDF for this date

Judge Hans Hofmeyer, presiding justice at the trial here of 22 former Auschwitz camp personnel, was expected today to rule on a proposal that the court go to Poland, along with the defendants, to inspect the site of the Auschwitz death factory.

The request was made two weeks ago by Henry Ormond, a Frankfurt attorney representative of the relatives of several inmates murdered at Auschwitz. The prosecution endorsed the request, holding that an inspection of the camp site was essential to the court’s tasks of determining the truth of the charges of murder and complicity in murder of the millions killed at the camp. The prosecution, in endorsing the proposal, urged the court to determine whether Polish authorities could guarantee the safety of the defendants.
