The Jewish Community Council of Boston appealed to Jewish voters this week, in an election campaign statement, to work for the elimination of prejudice and bigotry in the current election campaign.

The statement said that the JCC had “taken note of widespread dissatisfaction with certain election campaign appeals made to religious and ethnic groups” and it urged Jews to avoid the publication and the sending of campaign advertisements and communications in which “Jewish issues exclusively are dealt with” and in which “Jewish names exclusively are signed to appeals for the election of candidates. “

Another practice opposed in the statement was the use of a Jewish organizational title or affiliation in endorsement of candidates which could give “the impression that the organization mentioned itself endorsed the candidate. “

Voters also were urged to “insist on ascertaining the exact content of advertisements and endorsements in advance of publication” and to “refrain from disseminating assertions about a candidate’s record implying antagonism toward the Jewish community. “

The statement also opposed “endorsement of individual candidates by Jewish organizations” and “the presentation of Jewish organizational awards and citations to candidates during the election campaign. “
