Maintland Steinkopf, the first Jewish member of a Manitoba provincial cabinet, announced today he would enter a by-election for the Manitoba legislative seat he resigned two weeks ago.

He resigned as Minister of Public Utilities in the Manitoba Cabinet, as well as from the legislature, in a controversy stemming from his role as an unpaid agent for the government in land purchases for a centennial arts project in Winnipeg.

He added he would stand for the nomination in a Winnipeg riding for the Progressive Conservative Party and that he would produce all his files on the land purchases during the campaign. The election will be held September 30.
