German Jewish Communal Workers Victimized by Nazis Get Raise

The West German Government announced today it would raise by eight percent the pensions being paid to Jews who worked for Jewish community institutions in Germany and were persecuted by the Nazis, The increases will be retroactive to October 1, 1964.

A draft ordinance for the increases has been submitted to the Bundesrat, the upper house of West Germany’s Parliament. The increase is in line with a raise in the salaries of German civil servants receiving compensation. The former Jewish community employes are covered by a special ordinance in the compensation law for the civil servants.

In 1963, the Government paid 17, 000, 000 marks to the civil servants It is scheduled to pay out about 19, 000, 000 marks ($4, 790, 000) in 1964 for such compensation.
