West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt, one of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party, said in a statement in the German press today that the Government must find ways for prosecuting Nazi war criminals beyond the May 8 cut-off date, when the present statute of limitations for such trials goes into effect.
“The Federal Government,” he stated, “must take a stand which would be morally, politically and legally unobjectionable. The Germans are duty bound to take seriously the concern expressed on this subject outside Germany. There are still areas where murders were committed and which have not been looked into. Others can help us here. But no one can take the task from us. It is also doubtful whether all this work can be dealt with before May 8.”
