Angered over Nasser’s invitation to East German head of state Walter Ulbricht, but reluctant to sever ties with Egypt, the West German Government is considering reducing its aid to Egypt, it was indicated here today. Bonn sees the Ulbricht visit to Cairo, which is scheduled for February 26, as a challenge to its influence in the Middle East.

The foreign affairs committee of the Bundestag, lower house of Parliament, met this weekend to discuss the Ulbricht visit to Cairo but no decision was taken. As a result of the meeting the Government was advised to consider the Ulbricht visit to Egypt as a de facto recognition by Egypt of East Germany but that, instead of severing diplomatic ties with Cairo, economic aid should be halted.
