Chancellor Ludwig Erhard told the German people, in a nationwide television broadcast last night, that he was “very glad” he had decided to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. “I took that decision all by myself,” he declared. “After all, 86 other states also recognize Israel, and the Arabs do not find this out of order. The Arab excitement (over this step) will disappear in due course.”
