Two national Jewish communal leaders said here today that Jewish commitment was on the increase in the United States as a direct consequence of sectarian-sponsored community programs. Addressing a young leadership conference sponsored jointly by the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds and the United Jewish Appeal, Louis Stern, CJFWF president, and Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, stressed the role of the new generation in strengthening Jewish causes.
Mr. Stern expressed the conviction that growing Jewish interest in sectarian-sponsored community programs must be paralleled by increasing responsiveness of young leaders to changing community commitments and needs. Rabbi Friedman discounted predictions that American Jewry would succumb to the “kiss of death” of a benevolent society. He said the Jews would continue to play a historic role in advancing social justice and equality, even though their proportionate strength in a world undergoing a population explosion will continue to diminish.
