Max M, Fisher, national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, yesterday addressed 400 delegates at a regional conference of the United Jewish Appeal, representing 83 communities from Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia. The conference also commemorated the 17th anniversary of Israel’s independence.

In response to Mr. Fisher’s request to raise the greatest amount of money in any UJA campaign, the delegates reported a total to date of $450,000 in the local campaigns. David L. Lawrence, former Governor of Pennsylvania, who is now chairman of the President’s Committee on Equal Opportunity and Housing, also addressed the conference. He asked the Jewish leaders to join with him in the fight against prejudice for the Negro. He cited his and their common history of being victims of prejudice. Mayor Joseph M. Barr of Pittsburgh, welcomed the delegates.
