Pope Paul VI is “personally” in favor of the Ecumenical Council’s declaration on relations with the Jews, exonerating the Jewish people of deicide, it was declared today by the Rev. Giovanni Caprile, professor of Holy Scripture in Rome. He was given a reception here today by the Latin American section of the World Jewish Congress.
He took sharp issue with Bishop Luigi Maria Carli, of Segni, Italy, who had indicted the Jews anew of deicide in a recent magazine article. Rev. Caprile, who is director of the International Center for the Study and Documentation of Jewish-Christian Affairs, at Milan, also expressed the opinion that Pope Paul VI did not mean to counter the Ecumenical Council’s declaration on Jewish relations, when he delivered his recent Passion Sunday homily.
