A fund to promote Jewish historical study and research has been established by Columbia University in honor of Dr. Salo W. Baron, eminent Jewish historian and professor emeritus in Jewish history at the University, it was announced here by Professor Robert D. Cross, chairman of the University’s history department.
Prof. Cross, who made the announcement at a reception honoring Prof. Baron on the occasion of his 70th birthday, said that the fund, to be known as the Salo W. Baron Fund for Jewish Historical Studies, would promote the publication of scholarly works in Jewish history and literature and would also be used to finance lectures at the University on special ized aspects of research in Jewish history.
The fund, which will be administered by the Center of Israel and Jewish Studies at the University, headed by Dr. Baron, will also be used to initiate a series of group research projects in modern Jewish history. Prof. Cross said that the initial goal of the fund was set at “several hundred thousand dollars.” Speakers at the reception, which was attended by more than 500 persons, included Dr. Grayson Kirk, president of Columbia University. A cable of greetings from Israel President Zalman Shazar, a former student of Professor Baron, was read to the gathering.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
