More than $750,000 in contributions were announced here tonight at a dinner sponsored by the United Hias Service on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, held at Delmonico Hotel. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was the principal guest speaker at the dinner, stressed the need for relaxation of the present immigration law and for the abolishment of the national origin quota system.
Murray I. Gurfein, president of United Hias Service, presented the Senator with the organization’s film “He Who Saves a Single Life” which will be deposited in the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library archives. Mr. Gurfein reviewed the Jewish migration situation before the 300 Jewish community leaders who attended the dinner.
“For the third consecutive year, United Hias is facing an upward trend in our migration assistance,” Mr. Gurfein reported. “In 1963, we aided 5,200 migrants and refugees to find new homes in freedom. Last year, we helped 10,600 and in 1965 we anticipate resettling 11,700 persons.” The dinner paid tribute to Harry Ginsberg, Jakob Michael and Mrs. A. Louis Oresman for their “outstanding leadership and distinguished service in behalf of the Jewish migrant” over many years. Edwin Rosenberg, chairman of the UHS national council and the UJA executive committee, made the award presentations.
