The statement made by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the Jewish Agency, on the problem of fighting for the rights of Jews in the Soviet Union was taken up at the weekly meeting of the Israel Cabinet yesterday, it was reported here today.
A spokesman of the Cabinet said that the statement aroused “surprise.” It was indicated that the Cabinet decided to await further clarification from Dr. Goldmann and that such clarification has been requested by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol in a cable to Dr. Goldmann who is now in New York where he made his statement at a press conference last Thursday. The matter is expected to be fully discussed when Dr. Goldmann arrives in Jerusalem next week.
Sidney Einfeld, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jews, addressing a luncheon tendered today in his honor by the World Jewish Congress in Tel Aviv, said that Dr. Goldmann’s views do not represent the opinion of the key leaders of the World Jewish Congress.
