A special scholarship loan fund conducted here by B’nai B’rith women, started with $500 in 1934, has aided the education of some 200 men and women, some of them very famous in their professions, according to a report by the founder of the project, Mrs. Hyman Weisman. The fund has now grown to $12,000 and, this year, will provide scholarships to between 20 and 22 applicants, she said.
The loans, Mrs. Weisman said, are repaid by the students, without interest, many of them adding their own contributions when they enter their chosen professions. Among the students aided, she reported, have been a world-famous nuclear scientist, prominent medical, psychiatric and surgical practitioners, a political science professor, a Jewish Federation executive and a number of well-known journalists.
