Premier Eshkol today denounced the attacks this week by Jewish youths on Arab residents of Ramla, in which 12 Arabs were injured, calling them “disgraceful acts” and “hooliganism.”
The Premier’s criticism was voiced during a meeting with Police Minister Behor Shitreet, with whom he discussed a police report on the Ramla riots. The Premier told Mr. Shitreet that “all possible means must be used to prevent a repetition of such acts,” which he called “contrary to the spirit and honor of the people of Israel.” He asserted: “We must not allow hooliganism to stain our national effort.” As a result of the attacks, 19 Jewish youths were arrested. They were remanded yesterday for a hearing in Magistrate Court in Petan Tikvan.
The Premier also discussed the still tense situation with officials of the Education Ministry. It was decided that educational as well as police action should be taken to deal with the problem.
