United Synagogue of America to Publish Entire Talmud in English

The United Synagogue, the synagogue organization of the Conservative movement, announced plans today for the publication of an English translation of the entire Talmud which will render the vast body of rabbinic literature available to the layman in vernacular, conversational style.

Rabbi Bernard Segal, executive director of the United Synagogue, who announced the project, said that the new translated and annotated edition of the Talmud will be edited and printed in Israel under the direction of Dr. Arnost Zvi Ehrman of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The publication, which is expected to take 20 years to complete, will be issued in the form of monthly pamphlets at a subscription rate of $15 a year.
