Aaron Vergelis, editor of the monthly Sovietish Heimland, the only Yiddish-language magazine published in the Soviet Union, told a Moscow press conference yesterday that there would be more social progress in the USSR if synagogues were closed down, it was reported here today from the Soviet capital.
Asserting that no synagogues have been closed in the Soviet Union in places where they are needed, Mr. Vergelis said that if a synagogue is closed “we think this strengthens the progressive Socialist position of the people.”
