The Jewish community of Portland, which numbers 3, 500, announced that it would give financial assistance to worthy Jewish students needing such support to complete their education. The community’s Hebrew Free Loan Committee will give educational loans to students enrolled or accepted for admission at a college, university or vocational school above the high school level.
Loans initially will be limited to $500 in any school year and a maximum of $1, 000 to any student. Repayment will not be required to begin until two months after the student completes his education. This is believed to be the first time a Jewish community has undertaken to provide this type of program. The new loan policy has been approved by the Jewish Federation of Portland and the Jewish Family Services here.
