Sholem Aleichem’s comedy, “Two Hundred Thousand,” is being performed in West Berlin for the first time in the German language. The comedy is being performed at the Freie Volksbuhne Theater which was the scene last October of a documentary play about the horrors of the Auschwitz death camp, “The Investigation,” based on the testimony of the first trial of Auschwitz personnel in Frankfurt.

Peter Frye, whose production of the comedy at the Ohel Theater in Tel Aviv has already exceeded 300 performances, was invited to come to West Germany to direct its first production in German. Martin Berliner, a veteran German Jewish actor, plays the role of the lighthearted little tailor, Shimele Soroker.
