The long-deferred economic talks between West Germany and Israel began here today, with the first session lasting three hours. No details were released about the initial session. The talks will be continued tomorrow afternoon.
The talks are aimed at implementing the pledge made by Chancellor Ludwig Erhard’s Government last spring, when West Germany recognized Israel, to provide economic aid to the Jewish State.
The Israeli delegation is headed by Asher Ben-Nathan, Israel’s Ambassador to Bonn. The West German group is headed by State Secretary Rolf Lahr. The West Germans include high officials of the Foreign Office, the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Economic Cooperation. The Israeli delegation includes Yaacov Arnon, director general of the Finance Ministry, and Aryeh Manor, former Israeli Economic Minister in Washington. The talks are being held at the Foreign Office.
