Hubert Malin, general secretary of the International Union of Resistance and Deportees, said here today that he felt that “the pages of history are being turned too quickly” in West Germany and that the happenings of Germany’s grisly past “are too quickly forgotten.”
He spoke at the second International Congress of the European Assembly of Persecutees of Nazism, attended by 50 delegates from 72 organizations in 12 countries. They discussed questions of West German reparations payments and the growth of extremist national movements in the federal republic.
Erwin Welke, the Mayor of Luedenschied and himself a victim of Nazism, said “the tyranny of the years of 1933 to 1945 is a part of German and European history.” He told the delegates “no teacher should be hesitant to discuss that past with his pupils.”
