More than 100 gravestones in the Jewish cemetery here were found uprooted and overturned today in what was described as the worst act of vandalism on Jewish property since the end of the Second World War.

Although the West German press gave little space to the incident, fears were expressed in Jewish circles that neo-Nazis are out to repeat the events of December 1959 when a rash of swastika-smearing incidents swept Germany and other parts of Europe.
