Four hundred surgery and delivery room nurses began today a 24-hour strike to press demands for pay increases they claimed they deserved because of their specialized skills and work. A spokesman for the nurses said they would continue to serve during emergency surgery in accordance with existing practice on Saturdays.
They demand from 40 to 50 pounds ($13 to $16) more a month in pay. The spokesman said that if the one-day strike failed to produce action on the demands, the nurses would start a prolonged walkout next Wednesday.
