The 1966 Christmas stamp planned by the Post Office Department will violate the constitutional guarantee of separation of church and state, the American Civil Liberties Union said here.
The ACLU asserted that the stamp, which will reproduce Hans Memling’s “Madonna and Child with Angels, ” would “amount to government sponsorship of, or participation in, the celebration of a religious holiday.” The ACLU urged the Post Office to drop the stamp because its issuance might mark a move away from “the mild religiosity of recent years” to an “uninhibited adoption of Christian themes in stamp designs.”
