“Enthusiastic support” of the United States for the proposal to appoint a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was assured by Ambassador Arthur Goldberg, head of the U.S. Delegation to the United Nations, at a meeting of the U.N. Economic and Social Council which is now holding its session here.
Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig, of the World Jewish Congress, appearing at the session as a representative of a non-governmental agency, said that such an appointment would give the United Nations “the machinery to act swiftly, effectively and justly to any serious challenge to human rights.” He lauded Costa Rica for sponsoring the High Commissioner proposal. He appealed to members of the Economic and Social Council to give favorable consideration to the proposal.
