The medical department of the Joint Distribution Committee and the World Federation for Mental Health, with the participation of the World Health Organization, will jointly sponsor a conference on community psychiatry here next November, it was announced by Charles Jordan, executive head of the JDC at the semiannual meeting of the International Council on Jewish Social and Welfare Services.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Council’s member agencies: the JDC, the Jewish Colonization Association, the Standing Conference of European Jewish Community Services, Hias and Ort. Mr. Jordan reported that the November conference will also feature a special symposium on mental health and migration which will be of special interest to Jewish welfare agencies because of the continuing mass movements of Jews. Psychiatrists, public health doctors, social workers and psychologists will participate in the conference.
During its meeting, the International Council reviewed cooperative programs of assistance carried out by member agencies for Jewish populations in developing countries. Special attention was also given to activities arising from the Council’s consultative status with United Nations special agencies such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
